Homemade Blueberry Simple Syrup – the Ultimate Drink Upgrade

Recipe Summary for Blueberry Simple Syrup

Crush and steep fresh or frozen bluerries in a simmering simple syrup for a bright, berry flavoring to add to your favorite coffee, tea, cocktails, and spritzes.

I had a pint of blueberries already sitting in the fridge when my good friend brought hers by – going on vacation, can’t use them! After the success of my mint simple syrup drinks, I knew instantly that I would make homemade blueberry simple syrup with the bounty.

If you have a pint of fresh blueberries sitting in your fridge that are just on the verge of turning, do not let them go to waste. This recipe takes only a few minutes and rewards you with a beautiful, deeply colored liquid that tastes vastly superior to anything you can buy in a bottle.

We will be using this exact recipe over the next few days to craft an Iced Blueberry Mocha, a Shaken Blueberry Green Tea, and a cozy Blueberry London Fog, so you will definitely want to keep a jar of this ready in your refrigerator.

Making your own mixers at home allows you to control the ingredients and avoid unnecessary preservatives. Plus, the intense color from the real fruit makes any beverage look instantly photo-ready. A standard drink recipe usually requires about 2 Tbsp of blueberry simple syrup for a single drink, meaning one quick batch will keep you refreshed for days.

If you love making your own drink components from scratch, you definitely need to check out my mint simply syrup recipe. It’s so fun and easy to make unique drinks at home. I’ve used mint syrup to make mint sweet tea, a delicious minty iced mocha, and some great mojitos.

Step by step instructions with pictures for Blueberry Simple Syrup

Combine the ingredients

In a saucepan, add the white sugar, water, and fresh blueberries. Give the mixture a quick stir to distribute the sugar before turning on the stove.

Simmer and crush the berries

Turn the heat to medium and bring the liquid to a simmer. Let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes. Every minute or so during the simmer, gently crush the blueberries with a spoon or spatula to release their vibrant juices into the syrup. I used a meat tenderizer because it got the job done!

Strain and cool

After simmering for 10 minutes, turn off the heat. Carefully strain the syrup into a clean glass jar using a fine mesh sieve to remove the solid skin and pulp.

Store for later

Allow the liquid to cool down, then secure the lid on your jar and store it in the fridge until you are ready to mix up your favorite beverages.
